I Notice Alcohol Everywhere Now

No wonder people end up with a drink problem!

Since I stopped drinking, I notice alcohol everywhere. Not in the way that I want to drink it, but in conversations, celebrations and rewards.

I find it astonishing how much small talk revolves around what we’re drinking, what we’re not drinking, or what we “deserve” to drink.

On a recent trip I was amazed at how often alcohol came up in conversation. Adults joking about what they’d be having later. Comments about needing a glass of wine after a long day. People commenting that they “deserved” a drink after a long journey.

It’s so normalised we barely hear it anymore.

My children were once served Nozeco at a celebratory family breakfast. To their credit, they looked at me before drinking it. I discreetly shook my head. I didn’t want to cause a fuss on someone else’s big day. But I noticed.

I’ve mentioned it before - drinking and talking about drinking, has become cultural wallpaper. Background noise. The default setting. But it doesn’t need to be that way for you.
